Teaching A Child: Reading

Educating your child how to read in their early years has never been an easy feat. It is both time-consuming and monotonous. Children learn how to read at different paces and different teaching styles resonate differently with different children. Here are a few tips on your adventure with your child.
  1. Be Patient. As mentioned above this might take a while to achieve, therefore it may become frustrating. It is of paramount importance that you do not display any form of frustration to your child as this may cause them to lose interest. They begin to feel like it is unnecessary to learn as it frustrates you both without any current success. Keep calm at all times.
  2. Create A Reward System. Children do not naturally love dealing with anything they find difficult. This unfortunately includes reading for most. Promise them something every time they successfully complete a session. This creates an air of enthusiasm around the child. Also make sure you always deliver on your promises.
  3. Praise your child. Keep your child's spirits high with a "great job buddy" or something similar frequently. Children learn better when they are both happy and motivated. Do not forget to maintain a light mood yourself. Making play out of learning for them is bonus to the process.
  4. Do Not Do Too Much At Once. Every session should not be more than an hour as children rarely concentrate for that long. An hour session a day is enough. Too much results in frustration and the child may forget everything after the session.
Listed above are just a handful of things to keep in mind when teaching your children how to read. This is a very sensitive time in your child's life and teaching the basics in life  like reading needs to be done right.
